Donate Eggs as a Student
A guide to donating eggs while managing responsibilities as a full-time student
You may be surprised to learn how easy it is to donate eggs as a student. All it takes is a bit of planning to make sure you can commit to the schedule and responsibilities of being both an egg donor and a full time student. Here are some tips for how to successfully donate eggs as a student.
Know Your Schedule Before You Agree to Donate Eggs as a Student
Donating eggs does involve careful timing, so it’s important to know you can commit to the egg donation process. Consider your course load and schedule: if you have many difficult classes and a packed activity schedule, now might not be the best time to donate. However, we can help you plan the donation process around your schedule, including donating over your winter or summer breaks.
Plan the Egg Donation Process Around Your Class Schedule
One of the benefits of donating through an egg bank is flexibility in scheduling your donation. You don’t have to wait for an intended parent to choose you, or sync your menstrual cycle with theirs. The egg donation process takes about a month, with about two weeks of regular, brief clinic visits, usually in the mornings. At SIMPLIFY, these appointments are held at our partner clinic, Pacific Northwest Fertility (PNWF). You will need to take the day of the egg retrieval off from class or work. If you have morning classes, or if taking a day off is not an option, then consider donating over your breaks. This helps avoid any interruptions to either class or the donation process.
Consider Letting Your Professors Know That You Are Donating Eggs
Donating eggs is your own private choice, and it is also your choice who to tell. You are not required to tell your professors that you are donating eggs. However, if you will be missing or late to class for your appointments, it can help to let your professors know that you are receiving medical care, with a doctor’s note, so they can provide appropriate accommodations. A doctor’s note can simply say that you need to have a medical procedure and does not need to be more specific if you don’t want it to be.
Practice Healthy Habits When You Donate Eggs as a Student
Potential egg donors must pass certain health and behavioral requirements to be eligible to donate their eggs. Once you’ve been approved as a donor, you must continue to follow those requirements during the donation process. These include:
No nicotine, tobacco, or other drug use
No alcohol consumption
Maintain a healthy diet with moderate exercise
Abstain from sexual intercourse
Not having sexual intercourse during the egg donation process is very important, as there is a high risk of unintended pregnancy or injury while your ovaries are being stimulated.
Can Donating Eggs Help With Student Debt?
Egg donors do receive compensation for their time and effort in donating eggs. Donors may use that compensation however they choose. If the first donation goes smoothly, some donors may be eligible to donate up to six times total, as recommended by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM).
